“Sarah loves fantasy stories, horses, and cats. She thinks “normal” fiction is boring. Her spirit animal is Pinkie Pie. Don’t bore Sarah.”
- Cathy Lopez
Way more than you want to know about who I am:
I got a Bachelors of English and Psychology as well as my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Texas at Pan American because I was too scared to be more than an hour away from home. I spent most of my childhood on a horse or in a book, either way I was dreaming of being anywhere else. And when I say anywhere else I don’t mean Paris or Zimbabwe. Rather Valdemar, Pern or Middle Earth.
Books saved me and I’ve always wanted to add my voice into the chorus. (Weird since I am painfully shy. Don’t listen to Cathy, she lies. (Only some of the time. -C)) But I thought being a writer was a lot like being a rock star, not realistic. So at the age of seven I hid that dream in my heart and told people I was going to be a teacher. I was a really serious child.
So now I’m a public school teacher certified to teach Math, English, and Speech at the secondary level. Nine years of teaching under my belt never seems enough to prepare me for what the students can devise.
I went to grad school to give myself a push towards that dream of un-rationality. Now I’ve graduated and I have no excuse. I am a writer, and I will be part of the magic.
What I’m looking for:
I prefer fantasy, but enjoy sci-fi, especially of the classic social commentary sort, but more than anything I look for good writing. Strong characters, well-woven plots and clever concepts count for a lot regardless of setting. I want stories that grab me and won’t let me go. Quirky, unique and intriguing.
Things I like:
Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, Ann Bishop, Alexandra Erin, Tanya Huff, Laurell K. Hamilton, I, Robot (the book, not the movie), Philip K. Dick, Ursula Le Guin, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Monty Python, My Little Ponies, Firefly, Joss Whedon, Star Trek, Star Wars, Star Craft, and countless manga. (Embarrassingly, a lot of that is shoujo.)
I love vampires and unicorns, dragons and talking cats. Give me whimsy or give me death! Preferably someone else’s.
